Why Johnson County is Voting No.
-
“Jails are the most expensive way to make communities unhealthy.”
Epidemiologist Dr. Nichole Nidey:
I’m voting no because jails are the most expensive way to make communities unhealthy.
Jails provide punishment and exclusion instead of rehabilitation and support. Jails become warehouses for those with substance use disorders and mental health conditions instead of getting folks connected to services and treatment that actually helps.
If jails worked we wouldn’t need more of them… and they are terrible for public health.

“We should be investing in prevention instead.”
Andre Wright, designer, co-founder Humanize My Hoodie:
Jails are the last stop when all the other systems fail. And it’s the most expensive, least cost-effective option we have. We should be investing in prevention instead of a jail, which disproportionately impacts Black and brown communities, even in Johnson County.
